This is an original copper wall sculpture by the renowned Dan Anderson and is a masterful exploration of time and the natural world, specifically the rugged beauty of the Oregon coast. Utilizing the ancient metalworking technique of repoussé, Anderson hand-hammers copper sheet from the reverse side to create deep, three-dimensional forms without the use of molds or forms, ensuring every piece is a one-of-a-kind original.
The centerpiece of this 12” by 15” work is a 390-million-year-old goniatite fossil, an ancestor to the modern nautilus from the Devonian period. By embedding this prehistoric relic within his signature swirling copper waves and sea stars, Anderson creates a "total artwork" (Gesamtkunstwerk) that bridges the gap between deep geological time and the immediate, fluid energy of the Pacific Ocean. The interplay of the warm, malleable copper and the ancient stone fossil invites viewers to reflect on the enduring rhythms of our planet's history and the coastal landscapes that continue to shape the artist's vision.
