This abstract sculpture is a John David original piece through and through. From its 3 month proprietary grind, sand and finish technique, to its deep and intricate hand carved features. This piece of old growth reclaimed exotic maple Burl wood is John’s attempt to do justice to this once in a lifetime Burl that only Mother Nature could have created. It features a high degree of figuring that when sanded to a 1000 grit and tung oiled, and carnuaba polished ( plus a few trick”s of the trade that shall remain on spoken) The end result works to reveal the beautiful free Burl grain in all its natural beauty. It is mounted on a hand forged metal rod, with a custom die metal tool made specifically for this project to create the look of bark on a tree. The highly figured nodules of the base Burl were harvested at exactly the same time, mabey even from the same tree. No one will ever know. Both pieces of wood caught in time at the exact same monument in their life cycle making as if they were wishing to stay together. So in this piece they will forever be mounted together producing this truly priceless organic Burl abstract sculpture that is now captured forever in time for all of us to enjoy.

Artist Statement: This piece is way more than a sculpture to me. It’s a once in a lifetime chance I had with such a unique piece of wood, and I know I will probably never get to carve again this level of maple Burl. I have gone through 100’s of pallets of wood. Spent countless hours, days, and weeks looking for a piece of wood like this one. I literally stuck this piece of wood in my house for 6 months before I gut up the guts to take the grinder to it. And I had a buddy of mine mount it for me as I was worried what if I drilled the hole wrong. I won’t tell you what I paid for this piece of wood because you won’t believe me. This piece of wood is also the second time in my wood carving career where my wood wholesaler has called me up after the sale, and offered me double the price to have it back. Good luck with that wonderful idea. Ha ha. Anyway I have very much enjoyed carving ( Emerging Freedom) I consider it my best piece ever. I hope you have enjoyed this truly amazing piece of natures wonders
