This hand carved John David original captures our dragon in repose after a long hard day of creating havoc throughout the land. John has utilized the maple burls ( a highly prized Oregon specialty wood) natural nodules to represent this creatures weathered scales, dorsal ridges transiting into a sleek highly polished body. The rich, honey colored grain flows horizontally giving the piece a sense of latent power, and ancient grace.
Artist Statement: This piece put me through hell. I had to change the finish on this piece 3 times. Which means this extensive process of sanding back and removing all the old finish. (Basically redoing the full carve each time I had to do it again.) I came exceeding close to hurling this piece of wood over a fence, and into my burn pile, where I could light a rather large fire, and enjoy watching its demise into to the firry ashes. But I don’t like to admit defeat, especially over a 4 foot long piece of wood. So I finically got the exact finish on it that I wanted. I left it in my window for about a year so every time I looked at my burn pile, I could see this wooden dragon glaring back at me. It’s a really cool piece. I hope someone puts it on their window sill and enjoys it.
