Transcending traditional wildlife art “psycho snail) presents surrealist artistic interpretation of a familiar form. Carved with a deep respect for the wild and exotic grains and patterns found in this highly prized maple Burl wood sculpture. This piece features fluid sweeping curves that echo the slow rhythmic crawl of our good buddy this supper slow snail. The snail is presented on this (mound of earth) a beautifully custom made for this specific project fused glass base. The perfect piece for our sluggish friend to squiggle over to the other side. It’s a John David original and would make for a strong statement piece for any contemporary room, or a focal point piece to any heavily curated collection.
Artist Statement: A few years back my family and I were on a deep woods camping trip right here on the Oregon coast. And although steak is my favorite dish, a hard second is this specific salad that only my wife seems to make. Late at night I will head for the refrigerator and eat it all. Then the next morning nobody can figure out where the salad went. So anyway we had a ton of this salad in our cooler that set just outside the tent, and of course the first night I made the stealthy trip to the cooler of course with no light to wake everyone up to grab the tiniest bit of salad, so I reached my hand in the cooler and grabbed the salad bag and something supper slick and guru. I did not think to much about it and ate my salad in the dark. The next morning I saw the slimy slug tracks all over the cooler and realized what had occurred. So the next night I put rocks on the cooler lid to preserve what was left of my poor salad, almost feeling a bit sad thinking about what might have happened to the snail from the night before. Anyway everyone is asleep so it’s time to get my salad. I open the lid no snail, this time I use my smallest flashlight to avoid waking up the troops. There that little bugger was sitting proudly on my bag of salad gazing back at me as if to say I like this salad just as much as you do. There was no way in the bag for my new buddy psycho snail, and I have no clue how he made it into my cooler but I felt sorry for him not being able to get to the salad. So I put my new buddy snail on a nearby log a few feet away, and gave him half my salad. I sat beside my new friend on the log and ate my part of the salad in the quiet of night that comes over the Oregon coast woods late late at night. Both of us enjoying our shared stolen bounty as we starred into those deep woods. Long story longer. This piece is my recreation of my psycho snail buddy in maple Burl. Hopefully I did him justice.
