This piece is a tribute to the Oregon Shore Pine, and is a commissioned piece created by Aaron Sertich.
The Oregon Shore Pine (Pinus contorta) is more than just a tree found on the Oregon coast. It is a living monument to the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Often found clinging to the edge of rocky outcroppings where other life refuses to take root, these trees are sculpted by the very elements that seek to break them—salt spray, unrelenting winds, and the constant surge of the tide.
This piece strives to capture that delicate balance between stillness and motion. By encasing the 'twisted pine' within 20 pounds of solid, molten glass, in a attempt to freeze a moment of coastal endurance. The heavy mass of the glass serves as a metaphor for the immense pressure of the Pacific, while the tree remains a steadfast sentinel, reminding us that there is profound beauty in the struggle to remain grounded amidst the ever-shifting currents of life.
