This piece titled “The Dragon” is a John David original. It is hand carved over a 2 year period, out of fallen and reclaimed old growth maple Burl. This is a specialty wood that the Oregon coast is famous for. The sculpture has 2 unique, and very complimentary finishes that make it a highly sought after piece, and very desirable to a discerning collector. The first is its s tone ( almost high end glossy auto paint like finish) that helps give the piece motion and energy. The second is John’s properierity 3 month all natural hand rubbed tung oil finish, with carnuaba wax top coat to bring out the luster you see before you. This piece is polished at such a level of craftsmanship that the wood gives off a warm amber glow. Plus showcases the wild flowing natural grains in this speciality wood. The horizontal undulating shape of this piece are spectacular. Their is this sense of dynamic motion in this piece as if the dragon is coiling for a explosive burst of energy, as it travels threw the oceans, land and sea. Also while the live edge that happened to bee in just the right spots for this carving to make this a sculpture which will never be replicated. This piece would be a beautiful entry way piece to your home. Or a powerful statement piece for any heavily curated collection.
Artist Statement: A few times in my career I have been lucky enough to work with a piece of wood like this one. This wood used to be a rough chainsawed plank 2” thick 8 feet long, and all wild and crazy edges. It caught my eye immediately, and I had to have it. Honestly I had no idea what I was going to create when I started, and also when I was 90% done. Then at the end of one of my longer carving days I stepped back to get a judge of how I was going to finish it. Then I realized with a cut here, and a grind there it was for sure meant to be a dragon. I hope someone really enjoys this piece, because like the dragons, this one will be the last of its kind.
